I also like to design pieces which can be seen from all angles, so attention was paid to all details on angles of the bed. In construction, a  Torsion box technique was used to build the bed-head, while the rest of the bed was constructed using solid timber. | | | BED HEAD The bed-head is made using torsion box construction. Torsion box is generally a light skeleton made out of pine (in this case, plantation pine). A similar method is used in aviation industry for building airplane wings. MDF (medium density fiber -board) is used as a skin and applied on top of the construction and then it is veneered. Strips of Blackbutt and Jarrah are used as solid edges of the bed head. Special attention keeps the back of the bed head clean and simple without any holes for screws etc. This allows the bed to be displayed in the middle of the room with the bed head exposed. SIDE TABLES The side tables are permanently attached to the bed head. Solid Jarrah is used as a table top and corrugated iron as an outside wall. The frame of the side tables are made out of solid Jarrah using small segments to create the curved parts of it. Corrugated iron is the major part of the side tables. This material is very common in Australia and becoming more and more popular in interior use. The doors of the side tables are veneered using laminated Jarrah with MDF inside. Shelves are made of veneered MDF using the reconstituted veneer to match the bed head. The front edge of the shelf is curved for easy access to the lower part of the side tables. | BED LEGS The bed legs are made out of laminated solid Jarrah and the basic shape of the front legs were inspired by Indonesian furniture and developed through my personal experience of kicking my toes on sharp corners or protruding edges of the frame. Solid Jarrah legs hidden inside the torsion box construction, provide the necessary strength. BED FRAME The frame of the bed is made of Jarrah joints with high tensile screws sunk into the body of the frame going through the tenons. Only 8 of these screws with Allen heads are necessary to complete the whole bed. Underneath the mattress there are 32 solid Jarrah slats going across the bed frame. There are attached together with a linen strap for easy transport. FINISH: The two-pack lacquer is used as a finish to protect the veneer against any damage.
