Travel Indonesia Bali and East Java, Indonesie
A trip not just to the popular Bali island, but further to the Java island. Visiting active vulcanos, meeting local people, eating local food. Great multicultural experience.

Our trip to Bali and East Java was based on the fact that Garuda Indonesia Airlines offered a free stopover in Denpasar. Although the airport is called Denpasar, Denpasar city is about 20 km away.  The air strip itself is an amazing place to land. The aeroplane is above water until the very last moment and the landing strip itself ends in the ocean as well. Bali and especially Kuta itself is the destination of most of the tourist who come mainly from Japan ,Australia and Germany and the UK. Lots of them never see the beauty inland and just a few of them leave the island towards Java. However we had plenty of time to travel a bit further ,we travelled very slowly and without big plans. All the way in East Java in fact even without a map (I wouldn't recommend that). To travel without "Lonley Planet" lead us to places where we were totally unexpected visitors . Also the non-touristy rainy season worked for us. At many places the prices were down to the minimum.

Click to enlarge in new window picture Click to enlarge in new window picture This celebration was in the Goa Lawah - Bat Cave. The whole cieling was covered with fruit bats. It was obvious that the celebration wasn't made just for tourists.
That is the Bali you probably imagine. Some of the waterfalls were amazing. Lots of water in the rainy season provided quite a strong current. Very refreshing in the high humidity.. Click to enlarge in new window picture

Click to enlarge in new window picture Click to enlarge in new window picture After the small fish are caught, they are dried in the sun and then conserved with salt. The other picture is from the street market in Lumajang. Fish already  pre-packed for quick sale.
Some of the local farmers use petrol engines instead of cows for the maitenance of rice fields. However the rice has to be planted by hand . Click to enlarge in new window picture
