The art of mehendi is spread all over the south Asia, the Middle East and North Africa and recently is getting more and more popular also in the western countries. The traditional henna is mostly known as an amazing hand decoration for Indian brides but its usage is in fact much more common and diverse.

Henna designs are used to celebrate any special occasion – /an initiation, a birth of an baby/ and remains a sacred practice intended not just to beautify the body but to invite grace and good fortune into one’s home, one’s marriage, and one’s family. It’s kind of talisman, a blessing upon the skin.

The earliest evidence of the cosmetic use of henna is from ancient Egypt. The botanists believe that the plant’s origin is somewhere in Persia and in India is used since about 700 AD. Henna is very popular for more than 5000 years not only for its aesthetic or sacred qualities but also for its medicinal properties.

Henna is known to be antiseptic and has a strong cooling effect. It also believed to condition and revitalize hair, kill lice and prevent hair loss. It has long been used to dye leather and cloth.
