Czech-born PavelPajda Perina reflects on his days in the Jarrah forest studying diploma of Arts in Fine Furniture Design from the School of Wood Dwellingup, Western Australia, as he is establishing his own business in Queensland Noosa Hinterlands -Cooroy.

Pajda Perina was born in the Czech republic. He migrated to Australia in 1998 and after 16 months in Queensland, took up a furniture design course at the School of Wood, Dwellingup on the other side of the continent ­ Western Australia

Rhetoric, the art of persuasion, does not have positive connotation in today's society. This is probably due to it's overuse in politics, advertising and promotion. Rhetoric is mostly understood in a verbal form, especially in politics. Rhetoric is today strongly associated with the unethical misuse of persuasive argument by political and economic elites, and its reputation has suffered. In his essay I will focus on rhetoric in design, it's history and uses. I will explain the uses and links of rhetoric in examples of furniture design as well as analyse some furniture using the perspective of rhetoric.

The focus of this essay is on the principles of what are the influences in design processes, and the dilemma of design ethics and responsibility while fulfilling the objectives of design. Chomsky and Hermann put their case of inconvenient truth about our media in their book Manufacturing Consent (Herman & Chomsky 2002), first published almost twenty years ago. Their understanding of media is as a filter of information to serve the interests of the powerful minority elite. They suggest media is using spin to choose and answer questions even before there are asked. As a prime source of information today the media (TV and newspaper) voluntarily contributing by selection and ordering of news which might or should interest views and readers.
